Living by the Maramataka: Nurturing Mental Health and Wellbeing

Aug 5, 2024 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM - Living by the Maramataka: Nurturing Mental Health and Wellbeing

In an innovative approach to counselling, Ayla Hoeta invites NZAC members and supervisors to explore the profound impact of learning and working towards integrating the Maramataka, (Māori lunar and environmental calendar), into everyday practice. This webinar is designed to enlighten participants on how the Maramataka can offer a culturally resonant way to support clients who whakapapa Māori, fostering a deeper connection with te taiao (nature), tohu (signs), and the rhythms of the environment.

What You Will Learn:

  • Introduction to Maramataka: Gain an understanding of the Māori lunar and environmental calendar, whakapapa, and its significance in guiding wellbeing today.
  • The tohu and their meanings: Explore the three key areas of natural signs - tohu o te rangi (sky), tohu o te moana (water), and tohu o te whenua (land), and how these signs change and influence our lives.
  • Cultural practices in counselling: Discuss the importance of culturally responsive practices and how integrating the Maramataka can enhance therapeutic relationships with clients who whakapapa Māori and also non-Māori.
  • Practical applications: Learn how to weave the Maramataka into your own whakaaro (thinking), using specific phases and ngā tohu as tools for healing, reflection, and connection.
  • Engaging with te taiao (nature): Understand how connecting clients with the rhythms of nature can support mental health, well-being, and a sense of belonging.
